Two core premises underlie Mobile Surgery International‘s (MSI) mission to broaden access to surgical choice and quality. The first is that patients (and payers) should be able to make decisions about surgical options based upon access to complete information up front about all of the necessary services associated with their surgical procedure, the skill and expertise of the surgeon carrying out the procedure, and the total costs involved. The second is that waste should be eliminated and savings passed on to patients (and payers).

MSI has now posted detailed descriptions for two specific surgical service packages on the Company web site at www.emeseye.com/services. These “all-in” packages are designed to simplify patient and payer negotiation of the costs of specific surgical episodes by encompassing every predictable element of quality surgery, by openly defining and communicating these elements, and by fixing the specific cost for such surgical episodes.

Two self-directed uninsured patients had successful mobile surgery in Florida when Mobile Surgery International™ opened its newest facility last Friday. The new service option in Florida complements our service options in Kansas, Mexico, Panama, and Trinidad.

The service provided both patients treatment choice and a highly experienced surgical team. Surgery went well and both patients are recovering nicely, having been discharged from the hospital after an overnight stay. The mobile surgical service saved the two patients an estimated $62,000 relative to prevailing retail cost.

In October, 2009 Mobile Surgery International™ (MSI) performed a domestic mobile surgery case involving a patient from South Carolina, a surgical team from Florida, and an operating room in Kansas. The case represents the first domestic application of the mobile surgery concept that MSI had first proved in a foreign location.

The patient had had a complicated open abdominal operation and needed laparoscopic removal of his prostate. To do this well required an experienced team; there was none in his region. Outside his region, the choices were outside his economic abilities. MSI developed new excess operating room capacity in Kansas, forming a domestic Center of Excellence with Global Convenience™ to which it sent members of its Mobile Surgical PPO™ and the patient. The patient had uneventful surgery at a location he could reach more easily than a foreign country and at a price he could afford. As with foreign cases, domestic mobile surgery overcame barriers to treatment choice and quality.

On June 8, 2009, Business Monday, a weekly supplement to the Miami Herald, published a series of articles under the cover of “Mobile Medicine.”

The series features this story about how Mobile Surgery International cut costs and thus delivered choice and quality to an uninsured American. This is an unusual story in that Mobile Surgery International sent both the patient and his surgical team from the United States to Trinidad. The story balances outbound health travel with inbound health travel by sharing the example of a man who Mobile Surgery International brought from Israel to the United States for surgery.
